Up next on March 11th is What’s Going On: The Marvin Gaye Experience. As one of the pioneers of Motown, singer-songwriter and producer Marvin Gaye helped shape the sound of R&B music and is considered one of the greatest artists of all time. Soul man Brian Owens is often referred to as the “second coming of Marvin Gaye.” Owens, who has performed at the White House for First Lady Michelle Obama, dazzles audiences with performances that are full of soul and love well beyond his peers of today. His refined style combining classic soul with a slight modern touch is why audiences everywhere are calling him the new voice of American soul.

What’s Going On: The Marvin Gaye Experience is Brian’s tribute to the legendary artist and includes music selections that span Gaye’s music-making career. Early solo hits like “Can I Get a Witness” and “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” share space with “You’re All I Need to Get By” and other classic duets. And any Marvin Gaye song list would be incomplete without perennial (and challenging) crowd-pleasers like “Let’s Get It On” or “Got To Give It Up.” At its heart, Brian’s Marvin Gaye Experience is about “preservation — upholding the tradition of true soul music that is so desperately needed in our culture today.” The show prominently features a suite of pieces from Gaye’s “What’s Going On” album, counted as “one of the most socially important artistic works in the history of American music.” In light of recent events in and around Ferguson Missouri where he resides, Brian says the show also speaks to a heightened sense of urgency and the prophetic beauty of Gaye’s 1971 work.

Ten Outrageous Things You (Probably) Didn’t Know About Trace Adkins

Trace Adkins has led quite the interesting life. He’s been present on country music charts since 1996, following the release of his debut album ‘Dreamin’ Out Loud’. But surrounding his musical fame is a life full of extreme variety that has found the roughneck crooner in some of the most unexpected places. Check out the facts we’ve complied below for an alternative view into the life of one of country’s most exciting names.

Trace Adkins Book

10.  He’s A Damn Good Author. Trace wrote a book in 2007 called A Personal Stand: Observations and Opinions from a Freethinking Roughneck. Besides the long title, it has received great reviews and is rated 5 out of 5 stars at amazon.com.

Trace Adkins Tall

9. Trace Adkins is 6’6″.
Ever wondered how tall Trace actually is?  With some research we can confirm that yeah… he’s a big dude.
Trace Adkins Apprentice
8. His ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ charities were very personal.
During his first appearance on ‘Celebrity Apprentice,’ Adkins played for the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network because his daughter Brianna suffers from severe allergic reactions to peanuts, milk and eggs. His second time around, he played for the American Red Cross, an organization that came to his family’s rescue after their 2011 house fire.
Trace Adkins Skynyrd
7. He’s a big fan of ’80s rock and roll.
Adkins idolizes country stars like Merle Haggard and Ronnie Milsap, but also rock bands like the Eagles, Journey and Lynyrd Skynyrd. He believes that “the best rock ‘n roll was made between ’75 and ’85.” He also prefers the Rolling Stones over the Beatles. Adkins once said that he “was never a Beatles fan.”
Trace Adkins Shooting
6. He’s scarred — literally.
He was shot by his second wife through the heart. During a domestic dispute in 1994, his second wife Julie shot him.  The bullet passed through both chambers of his heart and through both lungs.  He crawled into the bathtub while waiting for help so he wouldn’t bleed all over the new carpet (in Trace’s own words).  He believes the reason he survived is because he lived near a Trauma Center.  He never pressed charges against Julie, but the pair divorced shortly after. He has a number of scars on his chest from this and other incidents.
Trace Adkins Finger
5. No, seriously … he’s really scarred.
Trace lost his pinky finger on his left hand. After he graduated from Louisiana Tech University with a degree in petroleum technology, Adkins’ left pinky was cut off while he was working on an oil rig cutting open a bucket with a knife. Doctors were able to reattach the finger, but it is permanently bent at an angle so he could still play the guitar. This makes it difficult for the singer to play many guitar chords.
Trace Adkins Animated 2
4. He’s animated.
He voiced the recurring handlebar-mustached character Elvin Mackleston on the animated series ‘King of the Hill.’ He also voiced Big John in the episode ‘Livin’ on Reds, Vitamin C and Propane.’ In addition, Trace has starred in his own comic book series playing superhero Luke McBain.
Trace Adkins Tractor
3. Tractors are his guilty pleasure.
Adkins says that the best piece of advice he’s been given that he actually follows is “don’t spend your own money” — except if it’s on tractors. He loves tractors, and he cites them as his guilty pleasure. “I’ve got three [tractors], and I can’t justify having three. I guess that’s a guilty pleasure,” he dishes.
Trace Adkins Hair
2. As far as his hair, it’s all or nothing.
If Adkins ever cut his hair, he says he’d choose a buzz cut because it’s a similarly low-maintenance ‘do. He’s been growing his mane since 1991.
Trace Adkins Gig.jpg
1. Worst. Gig. Ever!
The worst gig Trace Adkins ever played was at a wedding reception. “We played the song for the bride and groom to dance to, and the next song was going to be grandparents and the parents and all that. So, we started the second song and about halfway through, Grandma fell dead on the floor,” Adkins spills. “And we were still playing, and finally, the father turned around and yelled, “Stop! For God’s sake, stop playing. My mother’s dead.”

Trace Adkins Drops His New Album And Prepares For His Thrasher-Horne Main Stage Debut

With over 11 million in album sales, three Grammy nominations, and dozens of major motion pictures and television credits to his name, Trace Adkins always has something going on. It is that constant motion and creative diversity that has fueled his latest music, the much-anticipated forthcoming and aptly titled Something’s Going On – his 12th studio album – scheduled for release on March 31. Something’s Going On marks Adkins’ first album release on his new label, BBR Music Group / Wheelhouse Records. The first single off Something’s Going On, “Watered Down,” appeared on Country radio the 13th of this month. It’s been four years since Adkins’ last studio album Love Will… released in 2013, which debuted in the top ten on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart, and fans have eagerly awaited this follow up ever since.

“When I first heard ‘Watered Down’ I felt an immediate connection with what I wanted to say. A man comes to a point in his life where he begins to reflect on his past and what he’s learned and that’s what fueled this song,” shares Adkins. “If you’ve led the kind of life I’ve led, at some point you have to temper your vices.”

With new music already being rehearsed, Adkins’ 2017 Tour will launch on February 4, and will hit our Northeast Florida stage April 27th.  As a gift to his fans, Adkins is offering a physical copy of Something’s Going On with each ticket order to his concert in Orange Park.

Adkins’ trademark baritone has powered countless hits to the top of the charts. The three-time GRAMMY-nominated member of the Grand Ole Opry is a TV personality, actor, author, and spokesman for the Wounded Warrior Project and the American Red Cross, for whom he raised over $1.5 million dollars as winner of NBC’s All-Star Celebrity Apprentice.

TraceUSO

In recent years, Adkins has performed for our service men and women across 11 USO Tours, with his 12th scheduled later this Spring. In his 2007 autobiography, A Personal Stand: Observations and Opinions from a Freethinking Roughneck, he recounted his rise to fame, brushes with death, and battles with personal demons. Trace has played a tough as nails biker in The Lincoln Lawyer (starring Matthew McConaughey), a desperate father in Deepwater Horizon (starring Mark Wahlberg) and a wise oracle of a tattoo artist in the family-friendly film Moms’ Night Out (starring Patricia Heaton, Sean Astin, Sarah Drew).
