A CLOSER LOOK – Kenny Rogers & Linda Davis

Some of the most interesting details of a stage production can sometimes only be seen by the people on stage. Here at the Thrasher-Horne, we try our best to give you an inside look at all aspects of our performances. We want you to see all angles of your favorite shows and artists… more than just the view from your seat. If we can get access to it, so should you! It’s with this mentality that we bring you a new regular feature on the blog – A CLOSER LOOK. This will be our opportunity to take you into the spotlights, through the stage door, and into every nook and cranny backstage to show you how your night of entertainment comes to be – from load-in to load-out.

Kenny Rogers took the stage at the Thrasher-Horne on January 28th, 2017, with good friend Linda Davis joining him for a stunning retrospective throughout the history and music that makes up his phenomenal career. Check out some close-up shots from the performance below. If you were in the audience, you’ll agree – this was Kenny at the top of his game, relishing decade after decade of memories and chart topping hits!

With a career spanning over five decades and more than 100 million albums sold, Olivia Newton-John’s successes include four Grammys, numerous Country Music, American Music, Billboard and People’s Choice Awards, an Emmy Award, ten #1 hits and more than 15 top 10 singles. She recently scored another #1 hit, this time on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart with her daughter Chloe Lattanzi – becoming the first mother/daughter duo to top this chart. In 1978, her co-starring role with John Travolta in “Grease” catapulted Olivia into super-stardom and to date remains the most successful movie musical of all time.

In 1992, Olivia was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her personal triumph against cancer led her to announce her partnership with the Austin Health and the creation of the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness & Research Centre (ONJCWRC) in her hometown of Melbourne, Australia, which opened its doors in 2012. The Centre provides a comprehensive range of services and facilities for cancer treatment, education, training and research as well as a dedicated wellness center (oliviaappeal.com).

Her latest recording, “LIV ON,” a collaborative, inspiring new CD with friends Beth Nielsen Chapman and Amy Sky is intended for those who wish to transcend loss while walking a journey toward new-found meaning and hope, was recently released to critical acclaim. Avenue Q Production Company Returns To The Thrasher-Horne With Xanadu!

Following the runaway success of Avenue Q, the good people at Slow Burn Theatre Company are once again making the trek up to Northeast Florida to showcase their newest production, Xanadu. Based on the 1980 Olivia Newton-John film of the same name, Xanadu follows a group of muses from ancient Greece who spring to life from a Southern California mural in hopes of convincing a local painter to open a roller disco in an abandoned auditorium. Along the way, one of the muses falls in love with the painter, and the entire affair is underscored by the hits of Electric Light Orchestra.

Naturally, this show is not meant to be taken seriously.

Kira & The Muses

It’s hilarity on wheels for adults, children and anyone who has ever wanted to feel inspired! This adventurous roller skating zany musical spoof is about following your dreams despite the limitations others set for you. Roll and sing along to the hits “Magic,” “All Over The World,” “Suddenly,” “I’m Alive,” “Evil Woman,” “Have You Never Been Mellow” and “Xanadu,” all composed by pop-rock legends Electric Light Orchestra (ELO).

But if campy throwback humor is your forte, or even if you enjoyed Avenue Q, we recommend taking some time out of your busy February schedule to check out this pitch-perfect parody of one of 1980’s biggest cult films reinvented as a hilarious stage musical.

Thrasher-Horne Center Food Finds – Pasta Market

Hungry for some local food on your way to a show? Want a cool “locals only” spot to visit after the finale for dessert and conversation? Check out these local hot spots recommended by Thrasher-Horne Center staff members, and let us introduce you to the best our area has to offer! With Thrasher-Horne Center Food Finds, we plan to bring you a monthly spotlight that will turn your simple night at the theatre into a full-fledged event that you and your guests will remember for years to come!

If you’ve ever been to a show at the Florida Theatre downtown, then you’re probably aware of Casa Dora, the cozy, hole-in-the-wall Italian restaurant a few storefronts down from the theatre. A bit of an institution, Casa Dora has been serving up no-frills, authentic Italian cuisine to hungry theatregoers in the urban core since 1976. Owner Sam Hassan and Store Manager Freddie are well known to downtown Jacksonville types, and now they’re working hard to extend that renown to Clay County. Pasta Market Italian Restaurant (FKA Sam’s Italian Kitchen) on Kingsley Avenue has brought Sam’s ethos of homemade Italian food with love and care to our Thrasher-Horne neighborhood, creating a space that is perfect for a pre-show dinner with friends.

One thing you’ll notice when you dine at Pasta Market is the extreme attention to detail in all the dishes. The staff, and most especially the owner, are fiercely dedicated to making sure you get exactly what you expect in your dining experience. Don’t be surprised if you receive an individual visit from the chef at your table, and perhaps even a personalized off-menu entree created especially for you. This is a wonderfully endearing touch, hearkening back to the days when restaurants relied less on cookie-cutter menus and more on catering to the guests they considered to be family. And at Sam’s restaurants, you will indeed feel like family.

Every item on the extensive menu is hand crafted from scratch, from the pastas to the desserts and even the sauces and salad dressings. The kitchen at Pasta Market is also used as a prep kitchen, providing sister restaurant Casa Dora with much of it’s signature flair. Check out just a small portion of their massive menu below.
